Watching unfolding events

hugooakley
I have the election coverage open in another window on my desk top as I post this and type out invoices. Whatever way it goes, it must be the most exciting job being a political journalist today. They’re second-guessing smiling Tories and packed bags at the back of 10 Downing Street, at the moment.

So now you have a new Labour leader so that will be interesting. As you say first past the post is not fair, but hey, if you want a complicated system, check out all the ethnic and cross-voting in Fiji. But of course, the military put paid to that and won't have an election until 2014, maybe. It's all orders from the top at present and instead of complaining the people are mainly pragmatic, just coasting along.

No Wendy, we have a Conservative leader, but hopefully the coalition means that their more extreme ideas won't get through.

Funnily enough I wrote an essay at school in praise of aspects of the complicated system in Fiji. A simple first past the post system in Fiji could have resulted in one ethnic group holding power forever - which obviously would be unfair. Coming up with a fair system in Fiji is obviously a nightmare and not helped by certain people just grabbing a gun if they can't get their own way.
