Picking pine cones

xavierpinecones
The walk back from school means that all around the house there are little collections of pine cones, acorns, feathers, teasels, scraps of bark. Luckily the school uniform colour means that blackberry stains on the sleeves are unnoticeable.

Awww, this one's delightful! How are you both settling into the new school routine?

Collecting and noticing the tiniest of things is delightful - for a small child and even for grandmothers like me. I still pick up gum nuts and leaves.

Hashi, yesterday morning was very difficult - he was trying on the 'I'm sick so I don't need to go to school' routine. I asked about the symptoms and told him it was a 'psychological tummy ache' and that they usually get better five minutes after school starts but I would give the teacher strict instructions that she was to ring me and I would pick him up if the tummy ache wasn't any better. It was better this morning.
Wendy we are lucky that we have such a nice nature walk to school – he's going to know so much about natural history.

Julie, Lauren still tries that on, and she's nearly 10. But then she WILL go to the office and get them to call us. So we can't offer her that out. By her age it's "unless someone sees you vomit, you're staying in class."

I have all sorts of strategies. When they are genuinely ill, I take care of them obviously, but I make it very boring. No TV or computers because they need to recover. That usually helps to make trying it on in the future less tempting.

How did I miss this one, Julie? It's precious! (And I hope your back is better by now...)
