Glimpse of poppies

poppyfieldcrop
I sneezed my way through this lunch-time sketch (just to let you know that I am prepared to suffer for my art). This is the first year that I’ve seen this delicious red all over these fields, so I thought I had to capture it while it’s here.

Wow!

I remember one of the first things a watercolour teacher ever taught me was just how powerful red is in a sea of landscape greens

PS After we went to the NPG, I wrote to Toby Wiggins to ask him about his use of gesso for pencil drawings - and I've now got an invite to his private view this Friday in (where else?) Islington!

What lovely art you create! I don't think I've ever seen red poppies! Our state flower in california is the golden poppy and when you come across fields of it they are spectacular. I love your work by the way!
