George spreadeagled

I was feeling a bit rebellious this week. Our teacher Jan is a great fan of tone, she says ‘People do not have a thick black outline around the edge of their bodies’ but my tonal work was looking so horrible I sneaked in these two drawings.

I think maybe you should tell Robin not to try this at home.
And tell your art instructor to tell that (the bit about the thick black line) to Hiroshige, Hokusai, Rouault, Daumier, Kathe Kollwitz.
Lovely sketches, Julie. I've been meaning to ask you what you've been drawing with lately. Is it a Kuretake brush pen?

Julie-- people may not have black lines around them -- but YOUR artwork WITH black tonal lines is AWESOME! It gives your sketches such strength and character -- BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!

Ha!!! Keep on sneakin' -- while it's nice to stretch, you know what pours from your pores better than your instructor seems to.

I still think we do have thick black lines around us. Or maybe I need new reading glasses.

We don't? ahh, darn, I see thick black lines around everything and I draw them every time. Your sketches are beautiful.

Thank you all for supporting my thick black line stance! The teacher is actually pretty good, but she has a bit of prejudice against some of my favouite media. I have to tread carefully as it seems to be the only life drawing class in the area.
Laura I'v been using a Pentel water brush that I've filled with black ink.

One of my college design professors hated the color yellow, especially canary yellow (and was very vocal about it, too). but she loved purple. funny how some teachers can be so biased!
